IMCD Benelux creates opportunities in Ghana's Star Shea Butter Communities

Discover our commitment to health and well-being through medical screenings, benefiting 250 women across five communities.

IMCD Benelux is proud to support the development of sustainable livelihoods in Ghana through our recent initiative aimed at empowering local women in the Star Shea Butter communities of Tong and Nyong.

By installing new equipment and constructing warehouses, IMCD is enhancing the shea butter production process, directly improving the quality of life for these communities.

The Star Shea Butter, a highly respected cosmetic ingredient within Jan Dekker’s portfolio since 2011, is sourced directly from five women-led communities in northern Ghana, including Karaga, Sung, Tong, Nyong, and Tamalgu. This initiative eliminates middlemen, ensuring fair trade prices for the rural women who produce the shea butter.

Positive impact

Aligned with the IMCD Cares Fund, this project focuses on environmental protection, education, diversity, and health and well-being, creating a positive impact on both the communities and the ecosystem.

To further support the health and well-being of these communities, IMCD Benelux is allocating funds for medical health screenings, focusing on critical areas such as cervical cancer, HIV, and HBV. A total of 250 women across five communities have been tested, reinforcing our commitment to their overall welfare.

Sustainable development

As one community member, Asana Iddrisu from Karaga, expressed, "We are very happy to experience this health activity by IMCD. I have never been to a hospital, and during the check-up, I was informed that I am healthy."

IMCD Benelux remains dedicated to fostering sustainable development and improving the lives of those in the Star Shea Butter communities.
